Garden roundup

I posted back here about our general progress in the garden over winter and spring, and said I would do a more detailed post about what we grew, plants and seeds we used and how we got on with them. In this post I will mostly cover the edible plants because a lot of the more decorative ones haven't really grown in yet or still need a bit of work. We were keen to grow some of our own vegetables, we already had herbs in pots from our courtyard garden at our old flat and use them a lot. The ones we have are sage, bay leaves, rosemary, mint and chives. These all seem pretty hardy and easy to grow in pots. Our current plants have been going for ages and I actually thought the mint had died then it came back last spring! We wanted to expand on what we could grow now we had more space and could actually plant things in the ground. Last year was kind of a test for some things as we didn't have a lot of time to consider what to grow and prepare, so some went well, others not so much a...

Our garden so far

This week we have an update on the outside of the house. The garden looks pretty much like this at the moment Having rented for so long we are quite happy to have a good size garden for the first time! We have had gardens before but being tenants usually just kept them tidy rather than invest a lot of effort and money into a garden that isn't our own, but we want to make this garden a really nice little space. We like this garden because it is a good enough size to be able to do things with, but it isn't too big to make it a lot of work to maintain. It also doesn't come with lots of borders already dug or high maintenance plants that need to be pruned. You may be able to tell that we are all about low maintenance gardening! Our aims for the garden are to have it as a nice space to enjoy and to possibly grow some fruit and veg, but not have to be out there every day working on it (we have enough work inside!). Lets look at the garden as it started. Basicall...

Week 4 plus

This is where the week by week rundowns will likely end, as it breaks down into single projects after we moved in at the end of week 4. We had to focus in on finishing things or progressing them rather than having 500 unfinished things and also having to live in the house! Through week 4 there was less progress by us as we spent some evenings packing up our stuff and moving it in gradually and some evenings working on the house. At this point we just needed to get it reasonably habitable and make room for our furniture. Moving in was relatively uneventful, we don't have masses of stuff to move and had been able to move smaller things into the house in our cars already so really only had the larger furniture and the last few boxes to move. We even managed a pub lunch halfway through the day :) We had a skip delivered and loaded this up, clearing the rubbish and rubble from the back garden and also putting the old carpets in there. From a waste reduction point of view we t...
